Our Year Program in Vietnam
10 Months (August – May) | Independent or Shared Volunteer Housing
In a new partnership with Hanoi-based Innovative Education Group (IEG), WorldTeach is proud to collaborate in Vietnam’s growing education initiatives to place volunteer English teachers in schools around the country. In this fully-funded (flights included) pilot year, WorldTeach volunteers will join the IEG team on the ground to provide opportunities for young Vietnamese students to learn English skills and share cross-culturally in this country re-emerged from political isolation.
Nestled along The Red River, Hanoi is the second largest and capital city of Vietnam. Nicknamed “The Paris of the East,” the city is known for its rich cultural diversity, with a unique combination of Japanese and French influence from years of trade and colonialism. Hanoi has a warm, subtropical climate, with frequent rainfall and four seasons. As a city re-emerging from political reform, the people of Hanoi are accustomed to adapting in order to grow with our surrounding world. In this pilot year, you too will grow alongside students as you make progress together in the classroom and beyond.
You will be placed at one of IEG’s partner or affiliate schools for the duration of the school year, which runs in Vietnam from August to May. For English classes, schools use IEG-developed curriculum, which includes an entire system of syllabi, PowerPoints, worksheets, quizzes, test papers, teaching resources, and activity banks. Your role as the teacher will be to utilize these resources for your lesson planning, which takes normally takes up to 10 hours a week, but possibly less for those with more experience.
Placement & Housing
In this pilot year, volunteers will teach English in schools and education centers in Hanoi. IEG serves as an education consultancy for English education as well as some subject content. Schools that it works with vary from public to private, from well-resourced to high need. It is in the higher need schools that IEG, in this partnership with WorldTeach, focuses the support of the native-English speaking volunteer.
Upon arrival in Hanoi, you will stay in housing provided by IEG. These will either be temporary accommodations for your orientation and training with the partner, during which you would be given a chance to search and acquire your own long term independent housing, or could be your permanent housing for the duration of the school year. Apartments in Hanoi are plentiful and affordable but quite competitive in the expat market. IEG will provide ample resources and information about this when once you are in-country.
