Volunteer Role
WorldTeach volunteers work as English, Mathematics and Science teachers in a wide range of Secondary Schools and Teachers' Colleges throughout the country. Volunteers will teach at the O-Level, Form 1 through Form 4. It is possible that some more advanced A-Level courses will be taught as well. Like local teachers, WorldTeach volunteers will teach approximately 20 classes per week for 45 minutes each class.
Volunteers will engage in other secondary projects, such as teaching extra English classes, coaching sports, starting art clubs, or developing the school library or computer room. Volunteers have a prime opportunity to contribute their skills and interests to the broader needs of their school and community.

Placement Sites, Housing and Food
Placements will generally be in pairs with one other WorldTeach volunteer at your school. Additionally, there may be other WorldTeach volunteers in the town or region, or teachers from other international volunteer organizations nearby.
Volunteers will most likely live in school housing either on the school grounds or close to the school. Volunteers will have their own furnished room, although they might share common rooms with other teachers or staff.
Volunteers will have the ability to make their own food at their home. School lunches will not be provided but volunteers will have a lunch break to return home. Typical Tanzanian food includes rice, beans, ugali (a Tanzanian staple made from maize or cassava flour), meat kebabs, chipati, and seafood along the coast. Fruit and tea are also readily available.
Volunteers receive a $200 stipend each month, $150 from the Ministry of Education and $50 from WorldTeach, to cover the cost of food and basic utilities.

Length of Program
Up to 12 months, beginning in early June. After orientation, volunteers are contracted to work at their host school for a full academic year and attend an End of Service conference with the entire WorldTeach group. The first semester runs from the middle of July until December. After a 4-week break between the semesters, classes resume for the second semester in January and end in June. There are 2-week breaks in both September and March. These school vacations are a perfect time to go on safari in the Serengeti, attempt to climb Kilimanjaro, or sample the spices on Zanzibar!
Cost of Program
$5,990. This includes pre-departure information and preparation, round-trip international airfare, health insurance, in-country orientation, transportation to your site, meals and housing during orientation and throughout your teaching service, and 24-hour field support. Please read more about costs and services. Many volunteers are able to successfully fundraise all or a significant portion of their volunteer commitment. Please refer to our fundraising guide for more information about fundraising possibilities.
Requirements
Volunteers must be native English speakers between 18 and 74 with a Bachelor's degree (in any subject), be flexible, and have a desire to teach in Tanzania.
