WorldTeach is partnering with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science of Mongolia to bring volunteers to teach English in public secondary schools in the provincial (aimag) centers throughout this fascinating country. Until recently associated with Russia, Mongolia has adopted English as its official second language. But there are few English-speakers, and so the need for teachers throughout the country is great. The Ministry and WorldTeach are excited to be able to partner in bringing more teachers to help address this need for young Mongolians to learn English.
Volunteers will teach all components of English: speaking, listening, reading and writing. They will live in student dormitories at their schools. Students are eager to learn, in general, and discipline is good, so teaching is rewarding.
Aimag centers offer transportation and communication with Ulaanbaatar and access to adequate, if basic, grocery and other stores. However Mongolia is one of the most difficult countries for volunteers to live and work in. It is a sparsely populated country, which make distances seem even further. It is also potentially one of the most rewarding places to live and to work. Persons
applying must be very healthy, flexible, cheerful, and self-reliant, because of the minimal infrastructure that exists there. In addition, the combined stipend and food allotment is $120 per month, which is what the other volunteers from abroad receive, but money will be tight both for the volunteers as it is for members of the local community.
The program will begin in August 2008, with orientation. Volunteers will teach through academic year 2008-2009.
Volunteers must be native English speakers and have a bachelor’s degree in any subject. They must have excellent health. And they must show a capacity to work successfully under challenging circumstances.
