Honors and Accreditation in American Samoa
WorldTeach volunteer Bryan Williams talks character, leadership, and biting off more than you can chew.
On March 5th we completed our National Honor Society induction ceremony. We had 5 members, inducted 7 new ones, and at 12 members this is one of the biggest NHS groups the school has ever had. Hopefully all of them will be able to remain in NHS, but sadly I do not think that will be the case. NHS is founded on 4 core values of Leadership, Character, Service, and Scholarship, but my older students seem to ignore, or have not yet been held accountable for, everything except scholarship. Trying to teach character and leadership in a school that is not competitive and does not have sports programs can be difficult.
That being said, the sophomore class has a very good reputation, and I am glad to be an adviser for 6 of them now in NHS, as well as our sole new Junior who worked his tail off to get into the proficient classes and raise his GPA. Hopefully with some work and strong development of accountability we can have core group of students who are willing to lead instead of just pass the buck.
Tomorrow the accreditation team from the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) will be coming by for a 2-3 visitation. As a co-chair I have been putting in a lot of time from development of our accreditation plan to meetings held with other teachers and staff on how to prepare for the visit. I believe the school now has a much improved 3 year action plan that hopefully can be better implemented than the old 3 year action plan that just expired.
It is easy to bite off more than you can chew when it comes to developing multi-year goals. I believe this action plan is much more reserved, realistic and beneficial for our students if it can get designed and implemented as hoped. But, I guess only time will tell. Wish us luck!
